About Watermelon Pages

Welcome to Watermelon Pages, your go-to resource for exploring and celebrating Palestinian culture. Our mission is to document, preserve, share, and amplify Palestinian culture, culinary heritage and stories.

Our Story

Watermelon Pages was born out of a passion for Palestinian culture and cuisine, paired with a strong belief that Palestinian narratives and voices need to be heard more than ever. The dehumanization and erasure of Palestinians by mainstream media has created an atmosphere that allows people to vilify, demean and ultimately discriminate against us. Narratives, stories and the amplification of Palestinian voices will all play a key role in combating this near century-long erasure, double standards, gaslighting and discrimination. To learn more about this kind of discrimination, please visit The Institute for the Understanding of Anti-Palestinian Racism.

Watermelon pages is starting as a directory of artists, artisans, and chefs, but we hope to evolve the site to include a catalog of stories from Palestinians in the land and across the diaspora. We started with a heavy focus on food because we believe that food is not just about sustenance; it's a powerful medium for cultural expression, resistance, and the preservation of identity. But we hope to include many more parts of the Palestinian culture on the site, and that you will join us for the journey.

What We Offer

  • Directory: Discover the talented Palestinian chefs, artisans, and artists that form the backbone of Palestinian culture.
  • Blog: Enjoy articles, recipes, and stories that explore the rich tapestry of Palestinian culture.
  • Events: Stay updated on Palestine-related events, workshops, and gatherings that celebrate Palestinian culture and culinary traditions.
  • Podcast (coming soon!): The Watermelon Stories podcast will feature the voices and stories of Palestinians from across the diaspora and in Palestine.

Our name, Watermelon Pages, pays homage to the powerful symbolism of the watermelon in Palestinian culture. The fruit's colors – red, green, and black – mirror those of the Palestinian flag. During times when displaying the flag was prohibited, the watermelon became a subtle yet powerful symbol of resistance and national pride.
